An IUD is a small, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is a highly effective, long-term contraceptive method, with options that can last from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type.

There are two main types of IUDs: hormonal and non-hormonal (copper). Hormonal IUDs release a small amount of progestin to prevent pregnancy, while copper IUDs use copper's natural sperm-repelling properties.

Both types are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, making them one of the most reliable forms of contraception available.

The benefits of an IUD include long-lasting protection, ease of use (once inserted, there's nothing to remember daily), and the ability to return to fertility quickly after removal.

However, some individuals may experience cons such as irregular bleeding, cramping, or discomfort during insertion. It's important to discuss these factors with your healthcare provider to determine if an IUD is the right choice for you.

Before getting an IUD, you will need to see a Dr Soh for an assessment to ensure it is suitable for your individual health needs and lifestyle. During this consultation, the GP will discuss the different types of IUDs, assess your medical history, and plan the insertion procedure.
